Self-care is the best commitment you can do all year round. Follow these tips to winterise your routine and protect them this winter and even after any season.

So many people make the mistake of thinking that summer is the worst season for their skin and hair. After all, the sun dries everything out and burns it, right? Yes, the summer can do some damage, but don’t forget the winter season and how this could affect your hair and skin.

Cold air doesn’t contain as much moisture, and the winter winds can cause no end of damage to your skin and hair. With less humidity in the air, your skin and hair lose moisture.

We’re not going to gate keep our care tips for you anymore. Here’s what you can do for your skin and hair:

🎀 Top Tips for Luscious Winter Locks:

The winter weather can wreak havoc on your hair, regardless of type and texture. Like your skin, it must be protected to keep it healthy, but it’s not just from the outdoor weather. You also need to protect it from the heat indoors so that your hair is as soft and gorgeous as it was before winter arrives when spring finally rolls around.

  1. Embrace Protection: Hats & Satin Sleep

The biting cold outside will wick moisture right out of your hair. Make hats your winter accessory, but choose wisely! Some fabrics can cause friction and damage. If you can, add a satin or silk lining, or spritz your hair with a light protective mist before putting your hat on. And at night? Switch to a satin pillowcase to drastically reduce friction and prevent breakage while you sleep.

  1. Never Go Out with Wet Hair

This is a non-negotiable in winter! Wet hair can literally freeze and break in cold temperatures. Always ensure your hair is fully dry before stepping out. If air-drying isn't an option, use a quality blow dryer on the lowest possible heat setting.

➡️ Master Stylist Tip: When you do use heat, always, always prep your hair with a top-tier heat protectant. Our new HH Simonsen Styling Paste offers not just style but also protective benefits, creating a barrier and holding your look without stiffness.

  1. Use Oil Based Treatments

Winter-parched hair craves moisture! Oil-based treatments are fantastic for restoring hydration and vitality.

➡️ Master Stylist Tip: The DESIGNME GLOSS.ME Hydration Range is my current obsession for this! Its rich blend of Cannabis Sativa Seed Oil and Argan Oil deeply nourishes, instantly boosting vitality and leaving your hair incredibly soft and shiny without weighing it down. Apply a small amount of an oil from this range to your ends daily to seal in moisture and prevent split ends.

  1. Deep Condition Your Hair Weekly

Moisturisation is truly key. Once a week, treat your hair to a luxurious leave-in conditioner or hair mask to replenish moisture lost to the cold. These act as a protective shield, especially if you use heat styling.

➡️ Master Stylist Tip: Our HH Simonsen Moisture & Repair Masks are amazing for this. The Moisture Mask is an ultra-hydrating weekly treatment for thirsty hair, while the Repair Mask, rich in keratin, is perfect for rebuilding and fortifying damaged strands. Leave them on for 10-20 minutes, then rinse for incredibly soft, hydrated hair.

  1. Don't Over-Wash Your Hair

Washing your hair too frequently strips away natural oils that are crucial for protection and moisture, especially in winter. Try to extend the time between washes – if you wash daily, aim for every two or three days.

➡️ Master Stylist Tip: In between washes, reach for a good quality dry shampoo like DesignMe Dry Shampoo. This not only keeps your hair looking fresh but can also help absorb excess oil without drying out your scalp or strands.

  1. Don’t Wash Your Hair Too Often

If you wash your hair daily, stop. Washing your hair too often removes the natural oils that keep your hair protected and moist. This is even worse in the winter.

Try to leave as much time as possible between washes; if you wash it daily now, try washing it every two or three days. The longer you can leave it, the better. You can use dry shampoo in between; these open the hair shafts and allow moisture in, not to mention keeping your hair looking as though you just washed it.

Bonus Tips:

  • Consider a Humidifier: Adding moisture back into your home environment helps combat the drying effects of central heating on both your hair and skin.
  • Hydrate from Within: Don't forget to keep drinking plenty of water, even if you're craving hot drinks. Dehydration affects your hair and skin too!
  • Gentle Heat Styling: If you must use heat tools, always ensure they are high-quality with adjustable settings (like the ones from our HH Simonsen range, which we'll cover in Part Two of our blog!) and always use a heat protectant.

With a little extra care and the right products from our new HH Simonsen and DESIGNME ranges, you can keep your hair looking and feeling its absolute best all winter long.
